This was done before on the IG Forum a while back...When we think of old school gymnastics, we usually think of the USSR or Romania. But from the '70s through 1992 there were great gymnasts from second or even third-tier gymnastics countries who were great. They were overlooked because they weren't from a major gymnastics superpower. Who are some of your favorite gymnasts from minor countries in the old school era? Some of mine include:
Henrietta Onodi.
Kathy Johnson. Keep in mind that the USA was considered a second-tier country in the '70s and '80s because of judging biases. Johnson was respected by the Soviet coaches at the 1978 Worlds for her 8th place AA finish and bronze medal on floor.
Patrizia Luconi. Had an original vault and beam mount.
Luisa Portacarrero. Even though she competed past 1992, she was great on beam and has an original move on that apparatus. Who would have thought that a Guatemalan would make a World Championship final?
